Abdus Salam - Nobel Prize Winner
Biography of Famous People
Abdus Salam was educated at the Punjab University and St. John College , Cambridge, where he was awarded his PhD.in 1952.
He taught at the Punjab University (1951-1954)and briefly at Cambridge University before in 1957 to Imperial College, London as professor of physics.
Salam is a particle physicist whose most successful work has been the unification of the weak and electromagnetioc forces.
Similar but independent results were published at the same time by Weinberg in the USA. Coming from the third world, Salam was acutely aware of intellectual isolation of promising young physicists and mathematicians.
To stimulate the growth of science in the world , in 1964 Slam set up the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, where many young scientists form underdeveloped world have met to exchange ideas and learn new techniques.
Slam has been director of this center since its inception and shares his time between Imperial College and Trieste.Biography of Famous People
